Together Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its online premiere on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like typical physical horror, but beneath Together exists a deep meditation about our choices in loving each other.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when the couple relocate from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor never feels hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
